Over the course of a year, one in 10 Danes experiences hand eczema. It is manifested by the skin becoming red, swollen and itchy, and small blisters may appear. For many, it develops into a chronic disease, where the skin becomes thickened and scaly with painful cracks.
Hand eczema can occur because you have an innate tendency to eczema, making the skin particularly vulnerable. This may be due to previous or current atopic eczema (also called childhood eczema). More often, however, hand eczema is caused by contact of the skin with allergenic substances or substances that directly irritate the skin.
